What is the art about? Color and symbolism. I love color! I saturate objects with vibrant hue. Color is a constant experiment for me. Each element in the work can be symbolically interpreted. I choose elements that are universally symbolic and have lasted from the time of ancient civilizations to the present. Symbolism influences include study of ancient civilizations with a concentration on art and architecture, mythologies and comparative religious beliefs of all cultures, color symbolism and general cultural symbolism past and present.
Feng shui artwork, Buddha imagery, pattern and mandalas are the current focus for my artwork and I’m continuing the use of color symbolism in greater depth, incorporating appropriate symbolic hues instead of relying solely on aesthetics and intuition. Much of the color research is based on chakra hues, directional feng shui, and shamanic color use of various cultures. Continuing my research in global ancient to modern symbolism, I've begun incorporating additional symbolism, more attention to color, and use of pattern.
This year’s show is colored pencil artwork. After working for so many years in oil paints I fell in love with colored pencils from the first time I tried them and found that the colors can be mixed beautifully and different textures can be combined with the colored pencils for an effect much like a mixed medium artwork.
What’s next? For the rest of the year I’ll continue working with the Prismacolor pencils and I’ll have new work available for November’s Edge Life Expo show at the Convention Center in Minneapolis. During 2008, in addition to colored pencil artworks I’ll be making collage with beautiful Japanese papers.
